The AIA Austin Homes Tour is an much awaited event that celebrates design and our community that happens once a year. This year will be the 32nd year that AIA Austin features selected unique homes that spotlight the collaboration between homeowner and architect. It allows ticket holders a chance to step inside an architect’s vision and the ability to interact with Austin’s most innovative and inspired environments.
A new home in South Austin achieves sustainability through smart technology and carefully considered design. A gallery and studio addition to a 1970s home provided an opportunity to change its entire identity. October is prime time for local events to ramp up, and the AIA Austin Homes Tour is one of the best, as well as being a welcome break from/alternative to the abundant music festivals and other crowded happenings of the season.

Its long tenure and venerable status, however, belies the fresh approaches and inventiveness on display every year; the variety is substantial and refreshing. A new urban infill home for empty nesters in the old neighborhood of Bouldin, this 2,733-square-foot house projects a welcoming presence with a graciously scaled front porch and street-facing windows. On the inside, a cozy kitchen-living-dining area has a view of the street. A den on the second floor occupies a dormer with a view of downtown.
In addition, interior and exterior walls feature a smooth Venetian plaster, blurring the lines between indoors and outdoors. Sustainable design is at the heart of this new, 2,603-square-foot, four-bedroom home in Travis Heights. Smart features include smart locks on all exterior doors and a Lutron smart lighting system.

Ample natural light and simple materials add to the home’s new feel and aesthetic. Be expected to attend the two days of the Homes Tour on October 27 & 28 and shoot live Tour in at least 4 of the homes and send immediately to our PR team. Negotiate additional usage rights and fees directly with the architect or homeowner who may or may not wish to purchase the photography. A house in the central midcentury neighborhood is reinvented for a unified feel, good flow, and a balance of natural light. A lakefront home on a hillside curve incorporates the sites natural verticality into the design, creating a dramatic experience as one moves through the space.
According to Restructure Studio, the house is on course to achieve a five-star rating from Austin Energy Green Building. The smallest home on the tour at 850 square feet, this three-bedroom house in Bouldin has a garage that’s more than half the size of the main house. Designed for an architect-realtor and his family, the minimalist home features a wall paneled with siding that was salvaged from a chicken coop formerly on the site. The renovation of this Clarksville home preserves the historic character of the original house, which was built by Nick Dawson, known for many of the Queen Anne–style limestone cottages in the Castle Hill Historic District. Some changes, such as the new living room, look as though they were always there.

Designed to be a modern interpretation of the traditional farmhouse, this 4,260-square-foot Tarrytown charmer is the new residence of owners who were downsizing after becoming empty nesters. With neighboring homes close by, the house is designed to face inward and wrap around a resort-like courtyard, thereby giving its owners privacy. AIA Austin had good reason to include this home on the tour despite that it’s in San Marcos. With its retired octogenarian owners desiring a gallery and studio for their 1970s-era house, this property underwent a renovation and addition that transformed its identity.
You have the option of selling your photographs to the Homes Tour architects, project teams, or homeowners. The challenge of a small lot with close-by neighbors inspired this inverted take on the modern farmhouse, which places the main living spaces around a private courtyard pool. A young couple relocating from Chicago has the space it needs for its growing family after renovating this 1940s Tarrytown home. Improvements include a reorganized front entry and a kitchen and family room that were moved to a new, two-story addition.
The homes selected for the tour go through a two-step selection process, followed by visits by the AIA Committee. Entries are judged by design excellence, innovative use of materials, and sustainable designs. Each home embodies impressive craftsmanship, showcasing the array of designs, styles, and work created by some of Austin’s most elite Architects and Designers. Take note of the unique details of each home – the relationship and collaboration between Architect and Homeowner truly shines. This year’s tour features the work of award-winning architects that Portella has had the pleasure of working with, such as Chas Architects, Clayton & Little, FAB Architecture, and Weiss Architecture, and A Parallel.
The 2018 tour takes place Saturday, October 27, and Sunday, October 28, from 10 a.m. Tickets are now available, including a limited amount of VIP tickets for exclusive access to attend one architect-lead tour and invitation to the Homes Tour after party! Subtle nods to the music icon appear in the architectural detailing and finishes of the two-bedroom home.

Be expected to attend the two days of site visits for the selection of the homes May 19 & 20. Grant usage rights for reproduction in all Homes Tour graphic materials, advertising & media to the AIA Austin staff . Shoot all homes using photographer's own equipment and/or staffing as needed.
The addition of an office, utility room and guesthouse is intentionally set back from the original one-bedroom main house. With 1,109 members and 200 Allied Members, AIA Austin is the voice for the region’s architecture community. AIA Austin advocates for its members, the profession, career development, and design excellence. The organization influences public opinion and the policies that shape our built and natural environment. This will be the 32nd year that AIA Austin has convinced owners of fabulous homes designed and built by local firms to fling open their doors to design and lifestyle mavens of all stripes.
